Indian Railways (IR) registered a loss of 71.03 per cent (Rs 380.17 billion) in passenger revenue in the 2020-21 as train services remained suspended due to the outbreak of Covid-19. As of March 22, 2021, IR surpassed the freight revenues of 2019-20 by Rs 18.68 billion (2 per cent). The freight loading for 2020-21 stood at 1191.76 million tonnes (mt), higher than the freight loading for the corresponding period of the previous year (1185.99 mt). The total passenger revenue between April 2020 to February 2021 stood at Rs 124.10 billion as against the Rs 488.10 billion for the corresponding period the previous year.
